Barcode scanner: calories of packaged food

Point your camera at the barcode of a packaged food, or type the number under it. You see the calories and macros per 100 g or 100 ml from our food database.

The 8, 12 or 13 digits under the bars.

The camera picture stays on your device. Only the barcode number is sent to our server. Free: 1 lookup per minute, 20 per hour.

Your result

Scan a barcode or type its number to see the calories.

How it works

Your browser reads the barcode from the camera picture on your device. The picture never leaves your device; only the barcode number is sent to our server.

We look the number up in the same food database the AI Calorie Count app uses. Packaged products come from Open Food Facts, a free database built by volunteers. Values are per 100 g or 100 ml as printed on the label and entered there, so check the package if a number looks wrong.

The free tool allows 1 lookup per minute and 20 per hour, so it stays free and fast for everyone. In the AI Calorie Count app you scan faster, set your portion and save the food to your diary.

Questions & answers

Is the barcode scanner free?

Yes. No sign-up and no app needed. You get 1 lookup per minute and 20 per hour.

Why only one lookup per minute?

Every lookup reads our food database. The limit keeps the tool free and fast for everyone and stops automated mass queries.

Is my camera picture uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the barcode on your device. Only the barcode number is sent, to look up the product.

The product was not found. What now?

Not every product is in the database yet. In the AI Calorie Count app you can add it by hand, and then others can scan it too.

Which phones and browsers work?

Any current browser with a camera. Chrome on Android reads barcodes on its own; Safari and Firefox use a reader we load from our own server. If the camera does not work, type the number.

What does kcal mean?

kcal is short for kilocalorie, the unit for energy in food. In everyday language people just say calories.

Why are the values per 100 g?

Food labels list nutrition per 100 g or 100 ml, so products are easy to compare. For your portion, multiply by its weight and divide by 100.
